The main content of Decree 09/2016/ND-CP mentions the introduction of iodine, iron, zinc and vitamin A as compulsory elements into food. Types of foods need mandatorily adding with micronutrients, as follows:

-      Salt for direct use and that for processing need fortifying with iodine;

-      Wheat flour used in food processing needs fortified with iron and zinc;

-      Vegetable oil containing soybean oil, coconut oil, canola oil or peanut oil needs to have vitamin A

During four days between August 28 and September 1, 2016, the senior expert group of Iodine Deficiency Disorders - UNICEF, CDC, ICCIDD came to Vietnam supporting the Gorvenment of Vietnam to effectively implement Decree 09/2016/ND-CP. The experts and the Vietnam delegation including agencies of Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development and Ministry of Health (Agency of Processing forAgro-forestry- Fisheries Products andSalt, Department of Legal Affairs, Vietnam Food Administration, Department of Preventive Medicine, National Institute for Food Control, NationalHospitalofEndocrinology, …) paid a visit to Labo testing urinary iodine and salt production plants in Thai Nguyen.

The National Institute for Food Control as the leading laboratory in testing food hygience and safety have actively joined and released papers on Iodine testing methods. These methods developed and issued at the NIFC can be applied to test complicated samples (soy sauce, fish sauce, milk, functional food, animal feed, etc) while regular titration methods can not, as follows:

- DeterminationofiodinebyIon selective electrode method

- Determinationofiodine by HPLC method (iodinein theformofKIandKIO3 separately analyzed)

- Determination of iodine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)
