Training Workshop on “Application of LC-HRMS in Food Analysis”

Hanoi, August 22, 2025 – The National Institute for Food Control (NIFC) today organized a training workshop themed “Application of LC-HRMS in Food Analysis.”
In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Cao Son, Deputy Director of NIFC, underscored the growing importance of high-resolution mass spectrometry in food safety testing. He noted that, in addition to monitoring regulated chemicals and contaminants, the ability to screen and detect unknown substances in foods has become increasingly critical, especially amid recent discoveries of counterfeit food products and adulterated products containing banned substances. LC-HRMS is emerging as a modern and reliable analytical tool that enables the detection and screening of unknown compounds, the screening of unexpected compounds, and supporting molecular structure elucidation through high resolution accurate mass data

Following this, Prof. Dr. Pham Hung Viet of the University of Sciences-Vietnam National University, Hanoi, speaking on behalf of the Vietnam Mass Spectrometry Laboratory Network (VMSLN), emphasized the rising role of high-resolution mass spectrometry in food analysis/testing, in order to meet the rising demands for food quality and safety in the context of global integration. He welcomed the workshop as an important step toward strengthening collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among the VMSLN’s laboratories nationwide.

The Workshop featured several presentations, including:
 • Overview of the LC-HRMS development and applications in modern food testing (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Cao Son, NIFC).
 • Advanced Orbitrap technology solutions for high-accuracy and sensitivity in food analysis (Mr. Nguyen Thanh Le, Director of IETS Company).
 • Application of LC-HRMS in detecting banned substances in health supplements (MSc. Nguyen Thi Hong Ngoc, Laboratory of Food Toxicology and Allergens, NIFC).
 • Application of LC-HRMS in chemical residue analysis in food (MSc. Luu Thi Huyen Trang, Department of Chemical Residues and  Contaminants in Food, NIFC).
 • Maintenance and calibration of LC-HRMS System – A key factor ensuring analytical accuracy (MSc. Dang Van Ket, Department of Quality Assurance, NIFC).
The practical work and in-depth exchange session allowed participants to engage directly in analytical procedures using LC-HRMS, including sample preparation in the laboratory and data processing through the specialized Compound Discoverer and TraceFinder software.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion, where experts (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Cao Son, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Le, and MSc. Nguyen Thi Hong Ngoc) addressed participants’ technical questions. The session highlighted numerous practical issues, reflecting both the pressing needs and the challenges in applying LC-HRMS across food testing laboratories nationwide in Vietnam.
