In the present era, the demand for beauty and youthfulness of people is increasing that leads to taking care of products that can prevent aging from within. Nicotinamide mononucleotide, a substance that stimulates the production of NAD+, an important factor in maintaining cell rejuvenation, is widely used in beauty products thanks to its antioxidant properties and protect DNA.
1.Introduction of niacinamide mononucleotide
Today, with advanced science and technology, issues related to aging are also researched and focused. Aging reduces the activity of organs and systems in the body, causing diseases such as kidney failure, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, respiratory failure... Therefore, the demand for anti-aging products is increasing. One of the substances that has an effective anti-aging effect that has been noticed recently is nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) or beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide or β-NMN. This is a type of coenzyme involved in the process of producing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) - an enzyme important for many cellular functions such as metabolism, DNA repair, development, survival and delaying cell aging.

3. The effects of NMN
Studies have shown that with age, as aging occurs, the concentration of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) decreases. Inhibiting NAD+ consumption and/or supplementing NAD+ precursors is considered to slow down the aging process and age-related diseases by increasing NAD+ levels. Oral administration of NMN is feasible and may be a strategic therapeutic solution to supplement the reduced NAD+ levels of cells and minimize functional disorders related to aging in humans. Studies show that it is safe and well tolerated.
Besides its anti-aging effects, nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) also shows many other health benefits. NMN improves neural function, cognition and memory in mice with Alzheimer's disease. A study on mice also shows that supplementing with NMN improves intestinal inflammation, immune function and reduces pro-inflammatory factors in serum, correcting the dysbiosis of gut microbiota. A study on 108 people in Japan also indicates that drinking NMN in the afternoon improved the performance of lower limbs and reduced sleepiness in older adults, indicating the potential of NMN in preventing physical decline and improving fatigue in older adults. NMN enhances insulin secretion and improves insulin resistance caused by obesity. NMN has also been reported to improve the function of mitochondria in various metabolic organs, including skeletal muscle, liver, heart and eye. Another trial on mice also shows that NMN protects egg cells from age-related decline, increasing ovulation, improving cell division and fertilization ability.
4. The consumption situation of NMN
NMN shows potential in the role of anti-aging as well as many benefits for human health. Therefore, functional foods, NMN supplements are very interested and concerned by consumers. Pharmaceutical, nutrition, biotechnology and health food companies also research to bring to the market a variety of products containing NMN. They can be in the form of injections, enteric-coated preparations, water solutions, grains, capsules or tablets, pills and powder forms, as well as sublingual powder forms. The amount of NMN written on the label is from 50-150 mg/tablet, or a higher dose of 500 mg/tablet.
NMN products are currently popular in the dietary supplement market with global revenues of about 87 million USD in 2019. Health foods and cosmetics containing NMN are becoming increasingly popular in North America, Europe and China. The global NMN market was valued at 253 million USD in 2020 and is expected to reach 386 million USD by the end of 2027.
5. Clinical trials on human safety
The safety of NMN was also studied in several clinical trials on humans. A study on adult men and women in Japan showed no physical side effects observed after 4 weeks of repeated use of 1250 mg NMN once a day. An animal evaluation study also yielded high safety results. While the studies show promising and beneficial effects, safety and efficacy studies in large clinical trials are still lacking.
6. Testing NMN at the National Institute for Food Control
To evaluate the quality of functional foods, dietary supplements containing NMN, testing the NMN content is a necessary requirement. Currently, with many modern equipment and highly qualified staff, the National Institute for Food Control has developed a method of analyzing NMN by HPLC and provides NMN testing services in functional foods, health-protective foods with high reliability, accuracy and speed.
